Heeramandi

Collaborating with Sanjay Leela Bhansali on ‘Heeramandi’ was a dream realized, building on our journey that began with ‘Padmaavat’. We understood Mr. Bhansali's long-held vision for ‘Heeramandi’, and our excitement for this creative venture was immense.

Our deep familiarity with his cinematic language, garnered from previous experiences, provided invaluable insights into his meticulous attention to detail and ability to craft extraordinary worlds. Exploring the pre-partition setting of Heeramandi in Lahore, rich in cultural heritage, was both thrilling and humbling. We honored the project's beauty through extensive research, blending Indian, Mughal, and European influences to reflect the opulence and cultural accuracy of the 1940s British Raj period.

Our costume design, inspired by archival collections and historical figures like Noor Jehan and Patience Cooper, was meticulously crafted to transport the audience to the undivided India era. Working with a diverse ensemble cast, including talents like Manisha Koirala, Aditi, Sonakshi, Richa, and Sanjeeda, was a rewarding experience. The Mujra outfits were designed for both elegance and ease of movement, ensuring each character was seamlessly integrated into Heeramandi's world. Our collaboration with SLB and dedication to detail brought to life a world that is evocative and timeless, enriching the cinematic experience and leaving a lasting impact on the cinematic landscape.

Bibbojaan dons a vivid emerald hued French tulle saree at a soiree hosted by Nawab Wali Sahab for her at the Baloch Hotel.
The delicate saree was handcrafted with sequins, crystals and semi-precious stones and features floral artworks gleaned from a 1920s Parisian flapper dress and archival French lace fragments(possibly 19th century). It was paired with a hand embroidered beadwork and zardozi blouse which featured a tessellated pattern evocative of the resplendent plumage of Peacocks or Birds of Paradise rendered in striking shades of emerald and lapis-lazuli, derived from a vintage Art-Deco minaudiere. The embroideries of the blouse were rendered using multi-hued beads, silk-floss threads, pearls and sequins and the ensemble was completed with a Chantilly lace peticoat (underskirt).
